It’s a Little White Outside!

Woke up to the second snow of the season today! The first snow storm two weeks ago gave into warm weather and sunshine and became a memory. But I have a feeling this time it’s here to stay! I feel for the birds and and animals in my backyard. I feel they may not be ready either. Not all birds disappear in the late fall and winter. Winter bird feeding is a must! Most of their food may be buried in snow and ice for a lot of the season. The birds will really appreciate the food you offer!

Feeding winter birds in Northern Michigan can actually make a difference during those especially long cold spells and mountains of deep snow. Backyard bird feeders do more than just provide supplement to natural foods, some birds would probably not survive winter without some help. Most store carry a large a ray of healthy foods for our snowbirds, but homemade suet and seeds add a natural freshness to their diet.

Of course, the real reason that we feed birds is for our own enjoyment! We in Northern Michigan need that connection with nature! Inviting birds into the backyard brings, in most cases, squirrels, rabbits and even the occasional bear! The same birds and small animals spend the winter in our backyards, waiting for spring as well. We become attached to "our" little friends. It feels good knowing your supporting natures wildlife or at least the ones in our backyards. Feeding the backyard guest also gives us a little more to watch then falling snow!
